Good Vibrations? Measuring, Feeling, and Fixing Building Motion

Join SEA-MW for our fall kick-off meeting! This interactive program will provide a practical framework for understanding and evaluating vibration in buildings. Using live demonstrations with seismographs, wired and wireless accelerometers, an active mass damper, and potentially a laser vibrometer, attendees will see how vibration is measured, processed, and interpreted in real time.

Merit Awardee: New Construction Under $40M

Allianz Amphitheater

Set on a 4-acre site, the Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront overlooks the James River and downtown Richmond, offering dramatic views and a central position in the city's riverfront revitalization. The project is located adjacent to the historic Tredegar Iron Works, which at the time was a major industrial complex crucial to providing cannons and munitions to the Confederacy during the Civil War. This modern and impressive open-air concert venue was designed to accommodate 7,500 patrons while integrating and maintaining respect for the historic site on which it sits. One of the standout features of this new open-air concert venue is its innovative design, which includes a 20-foot-long, thin-profile, cantilevered roof “fin”. The roof cantilever is supported by an 8-foot-deep built-up structural steel truss, supported by vertical cantilevered steel trusses on each side of the stage. The venue layout required clear spans of 102 feet horizontally and 40 feet vertically to keep the stage viewing area wide open. Spectators in the lawn, bowl, and pit areas have an unobstructed view due to the long-span steel framing.
