Awardee: New Construction Under $40M

Wolf Trap Meadow Commons Rathgeber/Goss Associates

The Wolf Trap Meadow Commons is a new support building for the National Center for Performing Arts' Filene Center, replacing the existing concessions stand. This new 3-story building, built into the side of the hill surrounding the amphitheater, contains concessions, restrooms, kitchens, and event spaces. RGA coordinated several different structure types into one building to integrate with the surrounding National Park and Filene Center. The main building is a concrete structure with drop panels and multiple steps to account for under floor drainage and exterior wearing surfaces. The design included a transfer plaza area on the third floor capable of supporting park vehicles, multi-story bio-retention planters, and a heavy timber pavilion whose lateral loads had to be transferred to both steel and concrete portions of the building.
