Interested in learning how to incorporate embodied carbon into your everyday design decisions? Join us, in collaboration with the CLF Washington DC Hub, for a panel discussion with local structural engineers on putting embodied carbon into practice through the design process, from early stages to construction. Panelists will highlight best practices within their firms, barriers they have faced and how they overcame them, and overall strategies they have used to reduce the environmental impacts of their projectsThis discussion will equip you with additional knowledge and skills to support your firm and the broader SE industry’s goal to understand, reduce, and ultimately eliminate embodied carbon in projects by 2050.

Panelists:

Sean Augustino | Arup

Sean is a Senior Structural Engineer at Arup. He has 10 years of experience in structural engineering and is interested in the intersection of structures, sustainability, and nature. He is excited to pursue designs that reduce embodied carbon, improve occupant health and happiness, benefit the public and communities, and contribute to a sense of place. He has practiced in Seattle and Washington, DC, and is active with SEA-MW, ASCE, and ILFI.

Chris Bird | Silman

Chris is a Project Engineer at Silman. His experience as a structural engineer includes the design of both new and existing structures, with a strong emphasis in sustainability. He is a leader in the development of Silman’s sustainable design strategies in the Products and Specifications focus group, exploring how Silman’s structural specifications can help implement emerging technologies and construction strategies. He assisted in developing Silman’s Embodied Carbon Action Plan for the firm’s SE2050 Commitment and internal company embodied carbon tracking strategies.

Daniella Blyakhman | Walter P Moore

Daniella is a Structural Engineer and Associate with Walter P Moore. Her experience includes coordinating, developing, and delivering structural designs for a variety of projects including commercial, healthcare, education, and sports. She is also the Walter P Moore D.C. Office Sustainability Community of Practice Leader advocating for sustainable office practices, tracking embodied carbon data for the firm’s SE 2050 commitment, and using embodied carbon as a performance metric in her designs. Daniella has performed Life Cycle Assessments for core and shell research facilities and is responsible for performing LCA and carbon accounting for Walter P Moore’s internal office fit outs.

James Chavin-Grant | SK&A

Originally from South Carolina, James is a Project Manager for SK&A Structural Engineers. With eight years of experience, he has been responsible for the design and retrofit of numerous educational, residential, office, mixed-use, and institutional buildings throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. He leads SK&A’s Embodied Carbon Committee and their efforts towards decarbonization of the building industry. Notable projects include the DC Water Headquarters, Benjamin Banneker High School, and Skyland Town Center.

Moderator:

Nouha Javed | Walter P Moore

Nouha is an Engineer in the Diagnostics Group of Walter P Moore that focuses on existing structures. She has more than seven years of experience in structural and enclosure evaluation and restoration. Nouha also leads Walter P Moore’s Sustainable Design task force for the Diagnostics group, where she integrates their SE2050 commitment with ongoing project work.
