Harnessing AI Potential in Engineering: Training, Applications, and Beyond

The year 2023 has marked an extraordinary surge in interest for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, primarily fueled by the advancements in Large Language Models (LLM) like ChatGPT. In our upcoming presentation, we aim to provide a high-level overview of the AI and Machine Learning landscape, including but not limited to predictive models, computer vision, and LLMs. We'll explore potential use cases in civil and structural engineering, discussing how we can integrate these technologies into our everyday practice. Moreover, we'll identify the essential skills needed to effectively leverage these tools, and deliberate on how we can best adjust our internal training programs and staffing strategies. Our goal is to ensure that our team is well-equipped to harness the remarkable potential of AI in our future projects.

Presenters:

  • Dr. Murat Melek, SE, is a Structural Engineer and Data Scientist based at the Washington, DC office of Walter P Moore, with more than 15 years of industry experience. He holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from UCLA and a Master's degree in Data Science from UC Berkeley. Some of his significant projects include the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Frank Gehry, and the Basaksehir Pine and Sakura City Hospital in Turkey - the world's largest base-isolated building. He is committed to utilizing data-centric design and management techniques to cultivate sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective structures
